South Washington Senior Center undergoes remodel
Don’t mind the mess at the South Washington Senior Center.
The facility is undergoing renovations this month that include new floor, carpeting and paint.
All activities will go on as scheduled, however, except for the week of July 28 to Aug. 4, when the center will be closed.
“It’s business as usual,” said Rebecca Kropelnicki, marketing and intergenerational activities coordinator. “Everything we do in here will be moving across the hall.”
The senior center is part of South Washington County Schools’ Community Education Department. It’s housed in the District 833 Program Center in Cottage Grove, which includes a gym, cafeteria and classrooms that are used during the school year by students at the South Washington Alternative High School. During the renovation, exercise classes that normally take place in the center will be held in the gym. Activities such as Mah Jongg, pinochle, and Music Jam will move to the school cafeteria. Others, including stitchery group and bridge, will be held in the school conference room.
Seniors over 60 who enjoy the hot lunches that are served by Creative Senior Dining at noon on weekdays should go to the cafeteria instead of the senior center dining room. During the renovation, the meals will be scaled back to soups and sandwiches, Kropelnicki said.
In addition to a schedule that lists the temporary locations of senior activities and services, Kropelnicki said they will have plenty of signs to direct visitors. A receptionist will also be on hand to help.
The South Washington Senior Center is located in the District 833 Program Center, 8400 East Point Douglas Road, in Cottage Grove. Senior Center hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday. For more information, call 651-458-6650.
