South Washington County Weekend Planner: Outdoor events for the family
This weekend in south Washington County families can choose from campfire programs, Shakespeare outside, safety day at the mall or Boomsite Day in Stillwater. For adults, there's a benefit motorcycle ride.
The Washington County Parks Department is hosting two separate campfire programs, both set for 7:15 p.m. Saturday, June 25. Warner Nature Center will present a campfire program on "Screech Owls," at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve. Como Zoo will present a program titled "Bump in the Night," at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park. Visitors will "discover the secrets of living life in the dark through exploring the world of nocturnal creatures." Both programs are free, with a $5 vehicle fee. The 36th season of Shakespeare & Company, Minnesota's longest running outdoor classical repertory theatre, begins this weekend at Century College and runs through July 31. This year's productions are "The Comedy of Errors," "King Lear" and "The Two Noble Kinsmen."
All performances are held at Century's outdoor theatre complex on the college's West Campus, 3300 Century Ave. N., White Bear Lake. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and free for children under 12. Friday and Saturday performances are scheduled at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the ticket booth prior to the performance. Allstate Insurance in the Valley Creek Mall in Woodbury will host Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25. Activities for families will include visits with police and firefighting personnel, inspection of public safety vehicles, a coloring contest, entertainment by Dan the Balloon Man, prizes and giveaways.
Members of the St. Croix Valley Riders are sponsoring a bike run beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 25, to raise funds for "Have A Heart Inc.," which provides respite relief for families with a physically and/or developmentally disabled loved one. The poker run will start at Have A Heart, WI0356 State Road 29 in River Falls, Wis., and end at the Gas-Lite Tavern, W8945 Highway 10 in Ellsworth. Discover the history of the Stillwater Boomsite from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25. The Boomsite, in use between 1856 and 1914, was the center for storing and sorting logs that had been floated down the St. Croix River. At Boomsite Day, families can learn about boom operations during the logging era through storytelling and hands-on activities let by area authors, re-enactors and musicians.
