South Washington County Weekend Planner: Holiday events, activities throughout community
In preparing for the holidays this weekend, families in south Washington County can attend benefits, dramatic presentations and children's pageants in between baking, shopping and decorating.
At Light the Way Church in Cottage Grove, Brad Perrin portrays the angel Gabriel and Lynn Magee is Mary in "Two From Galilee," a Christmas musical scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16; and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17-18 at the church. Friends and family will celebrate the life of Ricky Faulkner from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Hidden Harbor, 388 Ninth Ave. in St. Paul Park. Faulkner, 27, of St. Paul Park, died Nov. 22 in a one-vehicle accident. The celebration has been organized to raise money to help support his year-old-son Carter. Faulkner is shown above with his son and fiancée Shannon Dingle. The celebration will include music by dj N.A.S.P. and a raffle from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $10 per person at the door; youth under 12 are free. For those who cannot attend, a fund has been set up at Anchor Bank in St. Paul Park. Donations can be made to "Benefit of Carter Faulkner."
The Park-Port Lioness Club's annual cookie sale will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 17, at Norris Square Presbyterian Home, 8200 Hadley Ave. in Cottage Grove. Cookies will sell at $4 per dozen. Gluten-free, diabetic-friendly cookies will sell at $5 per dozen. Pies, bread and specialty items will be individually priced. If you go, take a container. During the cookie sale, members of the New-Park Lions Club will collect nonperishable food items, hats, mittens, feminine hygiene products and cash for the Friends in Need Food Shelf.
Professional actor Kevin Norberg will present his one-man version of "Scrooge!" at a special Christmas service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at Light the Way Church, 7000 Jamaica Ave. in Cottage Grove. The program runs approximately 45 minutes and is appropriate for all ages.
Storytime for children, preschool through kindergarten age, begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Park Grove Branch Library, 7900 Hemingway Ave. in Cottage Grove.
The congregation at Community United Church of Christ in St. Paul Park invites everyone to join it for the children's production of "The Very Important Christmas Pageant," 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 18.
The congregation at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in St. Paul Park will present a reenactment of ancient Bethlehem, "Night in Bethlehem - One Starry Night," at either 5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. The program is free and open to the public with freewill donations accepted. A light supper will be served as children and adults "taste, see and smell what daily life was like when Jesus was born." There will be two 20-minute live performances as well as a variety of stations and activities for all ages.
