South Washington County School Board member questions extent of background checks

During a recent discussion of School District 833 policies, School Board member Jim Gelbmann said the district shouldn't require criminal background checks for "occasional" volunteer situations where parents come into schools to help with craft projects, for example.

Community Education Director Ernie Pines, who served on the policy revision committee, said it was not the intent to require occasional volunteers to have background checks but the policy would allow the district to do so if necessary.

Communications Director Barb Brown said the definition of volunteer would be clarified in the volunteer handbook she is writing.
