The number of people issued a permit to carry a firearm jumped last year statewide and in south Washington County.
Sheriff’s offices across the state issued 60,471 permits in 2013, nearly double the 31,657 issued in 2012, according to data released last week by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
There were 3,319 permits issued last year in Washington County. That’s up from the 1,947 permits issued in the county in 2012.
There were similar increases in two south Washington County communities. In 2013, 541 Cottage Grove residents were issued permits to carry. That’s up from 290 issued permits a year earlier.
There were 83 permits issued to St. Paul Park residents; 44 permits were issued in 2012. And in Newport, the number of permits dropped slightly. There were 38 permits issued in 2012 but only 35 issued last year.
The BCA reported there are nearly 165,300 valid permits to carry in Minnesota.
