Sixth candidate files for Cottage Grove City Council
Cottage Grove Minnesota 7584 80th Street South 55016

A sixth candidate filed to run this fall for one of two seats on the Cottage Grove City Council.

Sara Hyland, a transplant from Madison, Wis., filed for election shortly before the candidate filing period ended Tuesday, Aug. 12.

“I have been thinking about running for the last six months, but it wasn’t until July that I decided I was going to run for sure,” Hyland, a first-time candidate, said recently.

Hyland and her family moved to Cottage Grove in September 2012 to be closer to family that lives in River Falls, she said.

She currently works in accounting and human resources.

While Hyland said she does not have any specific issues she will focus on during her campaign, she said she wants to be “an advocate for small businesses.”

“I want to be involved in the community and help it grow into a place I hope my children will always call home,” she said.

Hyland will be on the November ballot along with both incumbent City Council members Derrick Lehrke and Dave Thiede. Other first-time candidates for Cottage Grove’s two seats include Steve Dennis, Matt Erickson and Tasha Steinmetz.

In Newport, incumbent Tracy Rahm filed and is seeking a second term, and first-time candidate Dave Lund also filed. Newport resident Paul Hansen filed on the last day of the filing period. Incumbent Steve Gallagher is not seeking a second term.
