Sieben, McNamara hold meeting on invasive carp Monday night in Hastings
Sen. Katie Sieben, DFL-Cottage Grove, and Rep. Denny McNamara, R-Hastings, will host a public meeting on the impact of bighead carp and steps being taken to try to stop the invasive fish's spread.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Pheasant Hill Library in Hastings.
Steve Hirsch, the Department of Natural Resources's director of economical resources, also will participate. The meeting will include a discussion about ways the DNR is trying to stop the fish's spread, including rebuilding dams, closing locks, creating bubble and electric barriers and introducing natural predators.
Sieben said in a release that the Legislature is currently considering legislation that will increase hunting and fishing license fees to boost funding to Minnesota's Game and Fish Fund. The uses of the Fund include fish and wildlife management, ecological services and regulation enforcement.
That funding would help the DNR as it works to slow the spread of invasive species in Minnesota, Sieben said.
