School Board candidate profile: Tracy Brunnette
Cottage Grove Minnesota 7584 80th Street South 55016

Cottage Grove resident Tracy Brunnette is in her 14th year on the District 833 School Board, and she’s hoping to make it 18.

“My main message has been my passion for education,” she said. “I absolutely believe education is the best investment we make in our future.”

Brunnette has been a parent, a substitute teacher and worked for the district. She said her financial background has proved to be an asset.

“My background is looking at figures and making sure we’re spending it in the right places,” she said. “I’m not conservative, if you will, but I want to be fiscally responsible with the money.”

Brunnette’s main focus, if re-elected, is student achievement.

“One of the reasons I wanted to continue is that I am very optimistic with the changes that I think we can make and where we will be able to go,” she said.

In addition to picking five School Board candidates, voters will also be asked to vote on three referendum questions — a levy renewal, a levy increase and a land bond — and Brunnette supports all three.

“Since our funding is dependent on the state, and the state hasn’t been able to keep up with inflation, we need this money to provide the programming and the education for our kids,” she said. “That’s just the bottom line.”

Brunnette said she supports using some of the referendum money for technology.

“It’s amazing what kids can do with the technology these days and the information they have at their fingertips,” she said. “It’s time to start getting away from textbooks that are out of date, that can’t possibly keep up with the changes that are happening in our world today.

“I realize iPads may or may not be the answer, but we just have to teach differently.”
