Woodbury resident Raj Gandhi believes there needs to be increased parent-involvement at District 833 schools.

“It would be nice for schools to facilitate ways for parents to be involved with their children,” he said.

Gandhi has taken it upon himself to be more involved in his children’s schools by running for District 833 School Board.

“If I wait any longer, they’ll be in the tail end of school, so it’s a good time for me to be involved in their lives,” he said.

Gandhi serves as president of the Woodbury Soccer Club and on the board of directors of the Woodbury Athletic Association.

Gandhi said his engineering background makes him a good candidate for the School Board.

“I think engineers think about things in different ways,” he said. “I think engineers do a much better job of managing resources and managing information and thinking about all the possible outcomes.”

The Nov. 5 ballot also will include a levy renewal request and a levy increase request.

“I’m in support of the levy requests,” he said. “But, I think there can be improvement in the way the School Board has been selling that.

“When I look at the overall budget and what it costs for one child to go to school over their lifetime, it’s a really good bargain.”

District 833 is also seeking a land bond, which Gandhi said he also favors.

“I can’t see any way we’re not going to need another building,” he said.

Gandhi said he believes the district is going in the right direction by using iPads in the classroom.

“If I put myself five years in the future, I think we’ll end up in a good spot,” he said. “The capabilities are just phenomenal — it’s not just an electronic book.”
