Royal Raptors miss out on .500, will play Raiders in sectional
The South Washington County girls hockey team missed out on a chance to claim a first-ever .500 record to close out a regular season as the Royal Raptors took a 2-2 tie against Cretin-Derham Hall at Highland Arena in St. Paul on Saturday night.
It was the second knotting of the season for SWC against Cretin, and it kept the Woodbury/East Ridge cooperative one game under the break-even mark at 9-10-6 with the sectional playoffs set to begin this coming week.
Rachel Letsche and April Weller scored for the District 833 side as the Royal Raptors fought back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to take the tie.
Goaltender Katie Ahmann made 25 saves for SWC as her teammates put 29 shots on the Cretin net in the three-plus periods of play.
The tie left the Royal Raptors in sixth place in the final SEC standings with a 3-8-5 record.
Section seedings were announced on Sunday and the Royal Raptors were handed a No. 7 seed -- despite having the sixth-best record amongst the teams in 3AA.
In spite of the low seed, SWC will face a familiar opponent in Hastings, which earned the No. 2 seed.
The Royal Raptors have not lost to the Raiders this season, winning once and tying once in the two games between the teams in 2009-10. The third matchup between the squads is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. in the Hastings Civic Arena. The winner will play either No. 3 Burnsville or No. 6 Eastview on Feb. 13 at Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Inver Grove Heights.
