Five-year-old Kathryn “Kate the Great” McAllister, of St. Paul Park, slowly opened her bedroom door Friday to reveal a brand new pink room, complete with a purple Disney castle, figurines from the movie “Frozen,” and a handful of monster trucks — just what she asked for from Special Spaces.

Kate, who has a rare genetic condition called Pfeiffer syndrome, was chosen by the national organization’s Minneapolis chapter to receive a room makeover. Special Spaces renovates bedrooms for children with serious or life-threatening illnesses.

Special Spaces also installed a new ceiling fan, cabinets for Kate’s medical supplies and a video monitor so her parents can start letting Kate sleep by herself.

Kate’s parents, Alan and Stacy, and brother, Leland, 6, watched as she took her new space in.

“I mean, she gets excited but never like this,” Alan said. “She’s so excited. This looks awesome.”

The room reveal came after a week-long renovation from volunteers at Special Spaces, Bob Michels Construction and the BATC Foundation.
