Tomes is officially on the map, largely thanks to a big summer. He helped lead his Net Gain AAU squad to a stellar summer season.

“It was a really good season,” Tomes said. “We played at a really high level. We had a lot of success. We traveled a lot and it was a lot of fun.”

His on-court success helped his team win games and helped himself gain some traction in the recruiting realm.

Tomes said he has scholarship offers from Minnesota State University Moorhead, Sioux Falls and the University of Minnesota-Crookston -- all Division-II programs. He’s also heard from Division-I schools such as Air Force and American University. Tomes said collegiate coaches have told him they like his shooting ability, unselfishness, understanding of the game, defending and his hustle.

“I just try to play hard every game and give it my all and let the rest of it take care of itself,” he said.

Tomes currently plans to at least play through the early part of his high school season with the Raptors before making a college selection

“(I’ll) see where it goes from there,” he said. “I do want to decide earlier, but I just want to see what happens.”

While playing at a Division-I program is a goal for Tomes, it’s far from a necessity.

“I just want to play somewhere where it’s going to be a fun basketball experience in a successful program, even if it’s D-II,” he said. “A lot of the NSIC (Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) schools are really competitive and really good, so I just want to go somewhere that’s really competitive.”

What is a necessity for Tomes is a school with strong academics. He scored a 24 on his ACT and will carry a 3.6 grade point average into his senior year at East Ridge.

He takes care of business in the classroom.

“I definitely take my academics seriously,” he said. “I want to go to a school that has great academics. The ball stops bouncing one day, so I want to focus on the other stuff, too.”

Tomes’ primary focus this summer was to improve his strength and athleticism, so he hit the weight room.

“I got a lot stronger,” he said. “I worked on my individual skills, (but) mainly the weight room. I definitely tried to get stronger and more athletic and I think it definitely paid off.”

With a busy summer finally winding down, Tomes’ schedule is easing up.

His only plans basketball-wise this fall are to play in his fall league and potentially take visits to the Division-II schools that have already offered him scholarships, with a lot of extra gym time on the side.

“Nothing major, just a lot of basketball,” he said. “It’s calming down.”

Tomes hopes it’s the calm before a major storm that will be his final season in a Raptors uniform this winter.

“It’s my senior season and I really want to make it special,” he said. “I’m really excited for it and it should be a lot of fun.”
