"Famous Dave’s in Cottage Grove is finally open for business," Mayor Myron Bailey told the crowd of roughly 40 people that attended Monday’s ribbon cutting for the barbecue franchise.

The opening comes after more than a year of uncertainty which left the project stalled numerous times. Current owners and longtime Famous Dave's franchisees Pat and Tim Buffman took over the project in November.

"We're so relieved and so excited to finally be opening this store," Pat said Monday.

With the help of the Cottage Grove Fire Department, embers from the company’s most recently opened store – Oxnard, Calif. – were brought in to light the smoker in a "passing of the embers" ceremony. Famous Sally, the franchises top trainer, said the Cottage Grove location was the company's 195th store.

The restaurant employs more than 40 people, most all of which are from Cottage Grove, General Manager Mike Spitzack said.

"The job creation from this restaurant is one thing, but the opening alone brings a different variety of restaurant to Cottage Grove," Bailey said. "We're very glad and excited to have Famous Dave's in town."

Bailey and Spitzack cut the first slab of hickory smoked St. Louis-style ribs while a handful of employees shouted Famous Dave's-related cheers.

The roughly 50- to 60-seat dining room, carry-out and drive-thru options, Pat said, provide customers with a number of ways to enjoy what she called "good food fast." Diners can also sip on a full wine list which also includes strong beers.

Famous Dave's is located at 8479 East Point Douglas Road.
