Portion of 70th Street transferred to Cottage Grove
In preparation for the road project that will align County State Aid Highway 20, or 70th Avenue, to Keats Avenue, Washington County transferred over ownership of a portion of the highway to the city of Cottage Grove.
"With a great deal of progress comes a great deal of challenges," said Danette Parr, the city's economic development director.
Currently, traffic traveling in either direction on 70th Street near the Shoppes at Almar Village must turn onto Keats in order to continue on 70th Street. The project proposes bringing the eastern portion of 70th Street down to connect with the western portion. A roundabout is proposed to control the intersection of 70th Street and Keats Avenue and will be situated adjacent from the Shoppes at Almar Village.
The northern portion of 70th Street "will basically become upper 70th Street and still serve those properties," Parr said.
As part of the jurisdictional transfer, Washington County will pay the city a one-time fee of $15,600 for the necessary maintenance through September 2015. However, as of this fall the city will be responsible for all ice and snow removal on the road.
