Park wrestling: LaBrosse advances, Giadyu and Linssen take losses in state tournament first round
Park’s Collin LaBrosse is advancing at the 2013-14 State Wrestling Tournament, however, David Giadyu and Cody Linssen will need a little help after losing in the first round of the Class AAA bracket on Friday, Feb. 28.
LaBrosse, a sophomore ranked fifth at 120 pounds in Class AAA, defeated 10th-ranked Andy Andress of White Bear Lake 13-5 in the opening round of the state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
LaBrosse (38-3) took a 4-2 lead in the first period and expanded it to 9-3 with a nearfall and a takedown in the second period. He then added two takedowns of Andress (27-7) in the third period and held on for the win.
Giadyu, a senior ranked sixth at 138 pounds, was upset by unranked Blake Olhausen of Alexandria (32-9) in the first round. Giadyu (34-6) led for the majority of the match, but lost his lead late in the third period, then was pinned with 21 seconds left by Olhausen, a sophomore.
Linssen, a senior ranked third in Class AAA at 220 pounds, drew No. 2-ranked Prior Lake junior Alex Hart. Hart (42-3) led for the entire match in the 7-6 decision. Linssen nearly pulled off the win at the end as two stalling calls on Hart cut his lead to 7-6 just before the clock struck zero.
LaBrosse got some good news as No. 3-ranked Sam Bennyhoff of Mound-Westonka (39-1) was upset 8-4 by unranked Blaine sophomore Malik Stewart in the first round. LaBrosse will now face Stewart (29-2) in the second round.
Giadyu and Linssen need their first-round opponents to win their second-round matches later tonight in order to stay alive. Olhausen faces tenth-ranked White Bear Lake junior Elijah Muedeking (30-6) in round two. Hart will battle unranked Rochester John Marshall junior Kenny Maclin (25-7) in the Class AAA second round, which begins at 6:30 p.m.
