Park wrestling: Flaata places fifth at USA Folkstyle Nationals

The Park Wrestling Club sent 10 wrestlers to the USA Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa - and they didn't come back empty handed.

Park sophomore Cory Flaata finished in fifth place in the Cadet division at 160 pounds, highlighting the Wolfpack's results in the tournament, which took place April 5-7.

"It's a great tournament," Park head coach Jim LaBrosse said. "It offers valuable experience for these wrestlers in the future."

Flaata went 4-2 in the tournament, which had wrestlers from 42 different states competing. Flaata defeated Indiana's Caleb Cook with a pin in the opener, beat Illinois' Tyler Deamas 5-1 in his second match, then beat Brandon Fleischman of Wisconsin 8-7 in his third match. Flaata lost his fourth match, 4-2, to Kansas' Anthony Kapel, then fell 3-0 to Arizona's Bridge Barker in his fifth match, before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Sam Grove of Minnesota.

Other wrestlers competing for Park in the national tournament were: Freshman Zach Wills, who went 2-2 in the Cadet 182-pound division, freshman Collin LaBrosse, who was 2-2 at the Cadet 126-pound division, eighth grader Justin Sabin, who went 0-2 at the Cadet 285-pound division, sophomore Daniel Duval, who was 1-2 in the 138-pound Junior division, sophomore Brandon Young, who was 0-2 at the 160-pound Junior division, seventh grader Garrett Whitehead, who was 1-2 in the 112-pound Schoolboy division, junior David Giadyu, who was 0-2 at the Junior division, and Brandon Kortus, who wrestled at the 55-pound Bantam division and Nick Fuchs, who wrestled at the 120-pound Intermediate division.
