Ally Gorres earned a Suburban East Conference championship in the long jump to highlight the Park boys and girls track teams' solid showings at the SEC Championship meet, held Tuesday, May 21, and Thursday, May 23, at East Ridge High School.
Gorres, a freshman, won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 11.75 inches, well ahead of the second-place finisher, Mounds View sophomore Elizabeth Menne (16-02.25). In all, Gorres earned all-conference in four events - the long jump, the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and as part of the Wolfpack's 800-meter relay.
In the 200, Gorres was just barely edged by another freshman, Cretin-Derham Hall's Brieasha Hunter. Gorres ran a time of 25.57, while Hunter sprinted to a 25.32 time. In the 100, Gorres took third with a time of 12.39. Cretin-Derham Hall junior Megan Linder was first with a meet-record 12.08 time. Hunter was second (12.25). In the relays, Gorres teamed up with junior Temi Ogunrinde, senior Sharmaine Turner and fellow freshman Ciara Gregory to take second place with a time of 1 minute, 46.16 seconds. Stillwater (1:45.72) won the event with a team that included three seniors. Also, individually, Ogunrinde finished strong in the 400-meter dash, taking third place with a time of 1:01.07. Linder (56.96) won the event.
On the boys side, Park senior Dylan Smallidge turned in the top finish for the Wolfpack, coming in fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 5 inches. Woodbury's Abiola Abodunde won the event (45-00.75). Fellow senior Irving Gutierrez placed seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.41. Forest Lake senior Rich Carr won the race with a meet-record time of 10.75. In the relays, Park's 400-meter team of Gutierrez, Smallidge and freshmen Oreolawa Oduloje and Michael Griffin earned sixth place in the event with a time of 45.39. Gutierrez and Smallidge helped Park set the SEC record in the event last year -- along with 2012 grads R.J. Alowonle and D'Monte Farley -- in a time of 42.5.
Overall, the Park girls came in eighth place in the 10-team meet with 75 points, while the Wolfpack boys placed 10th with 18 points. Mounds View won the girls meet with 180 points and Roseville won the boys meet with 169 points.
Next, Park will compete in the Section 3AA Championship meet, held Tuesday and Thursday, May 28 and 30, at the University of St. Thomas.
