Park High's softball won five of its six games last week, sweeping its three-game invitational Saturday after beating Woodbury and Forest Lake on Wednesday and Thursday, respectfully.

The Wolfpack's only defeat came on the hands of White Bear Lake on Monday. After besting the Bears 11-3 in a mid-April contest, Park lost to White Bear Lake 6-0 Monday for its second loss of the season.

"Our conference is tough," said Park coach Charlie Whitbred. "You can't let up against anyone in the conference. If you do, you're going to get beat.

"That's the great thing about sports -- you never know what's going to happen."

The Wolfpack, however, followed up with a five-game winning streak, including a 6-3 win over Woodbury at home on Wednesday after junior Jamie Brooks went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in four runs.

"We were talking to each other, supporting each other and helping each other out," Brooks said on Wednesday. "It was better than (Monday). It's Woodbury, so we have this rival-thing that we want to beat them. Usually when we play Woodbury, we find a way for Woodbury to beat us. Today we didn't."

Besides its win over Woodbury on Wednesday and its 6-5 victory over Forest Lake on Thursday, Park polished its week with three wins at Lamar Fields on Saturday, including a 25-0 blanking of Winona.

Kelsey Tape gave up four hits and struck out seven in five innings on the mound and Coly Mills was 3-for-4, with two doubles, a triple and four RBI.

The Wolfpack's 8-7 win over Hill Murray, though, wasn't as easy.

Brooks hit a home run and Brittany Bollman and Sam Hildebrandt contributed two hits apiece, but Hill Murray had 10 hits in the first six innings and Hildebrandt walked six batters.

"Hildebrandt walked quite a few, but our defense didn't help her out much," Whitbred said. "I'm kind of seeing the same things I saw in spring training -- some inconsistencies in our defense. We need to play a little bit tighter defense. We don't usually give up seven, eight, nine runs a game. That's not typical Park softball. We've got to tighten up our defense.

"Offensively, we swung the bat pretty good, so we've got to be happy with that. Against Johnson, we beat them 6-5, but they didn't have their number one pitcher throwing either. But still, we won three games and won five out of six games last week, so that's a pretty darn good week."

Tape pitched seven innings in the win over Johnson, giving up seven hits and striking out four batters. Mills and Amanda Ruben had two hits and an RBI apiece, and Elizabeth Murray had a home run as the Wolfpack improved to 10-2 on the season.
