Park sports column by Phil Kuemmel
Summer has arrived, which signals the end of our spring season.
We have once again finished a successful season and school year. Our adapted softball team, playing at East Ridge, again had a good season, finishing fifth in the state tournament. This team is not just about winning and losing. It is just about participating and being a part of a team. Whether they are winning or losing, the players always have a smile on their face. This continues to be one of my favorite teams to watch.
Two members of our speech team participated in the state tournament. Kemi Olukoga finished in sixth place in the poetry division, and Molly Moran took eighth in humorous.
Freshman Ally Gorres was the lone Wolfpack representative at the state track and field meet. She took sixth place in the long jump to earn all-state honors. She also ran well in the 100 meter dash, but did not make the finals. Sophomore Bailey Aasen was named all-state in girls lacrosse, and Mary Turitto made the second team all-state for softball, which means all three ladies will have their pictures hung in our all-state hallway.
The softball team had a great win against the number one team in the state in section play, and Turitto and Amber Galloway made the Section 3AAA all-tournament team. Mary was also a finalist for the Miss Softball award and played in the senior all-star game.
While having many accomplishments on the field, our students also had great success in the classroom. A total of six athletes earned academic all-state honors, including Katelyn Floysand, Ally Gorres, Temi Ogunrinde, Rebekah Schulte, and Brian Buckner in track and field and tennis player Charlie Link. The girls track team was awarded the gold academic team award (team GPA or 3.75 or above), and the boys track and softball teams received silver awards (above 3.5).
While many of these athletes are underclassman and will be returning for another season, we will really miss the seniors and their contributions to our teams. Congratulations to all spring student-athletes and coaches on a successful season.
