Park softball: Galloway, Wolfpack advance in playoffs with win over Simley
The Park softball team advanced to the second round of the Section 3AAA playoffs with a 4-1 win over eighth-seeded Simley on the road Wednesday.
Park, the ninth seed, broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take control of the game.
After Simley junior pitcher Erin Millerbernd held Park (7-6) to three hits and no runs through six innings, Simley (11-5) brought in freshman Abby Kain for the seventh inning. Kain allowed all four runs, registering one out, before Simley re-inserted Millerbernd to get the final two outs.
Park junior Sam Flack provided the biggest hit for the Wolfpack in the game. With runners on second and third and one out, Flack smacked a double over the head of Simley's left fielder to score the game's first runs and put the Wolfpack up 2-0. Park freshman Gwen Warling then doubled to drive in Flack, making it 3-0. Park junior Amber Galloway followed with a single, scoring Warling and completing the scoring.
Galloway, the Wolfpack's starting pitcher, led the way for Park in the win. Galloway threw a complete-game four-hitter, allowing one run, striking out four and walking two. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and an RBI. Flack was 1-for-3 in the game with two RBI and senior Mary Turitto was 1-for-3 with a steal and a run scored.
The win gave Park a berth in the double-elimination tournament and earned the Wolfpack a date with No. 1 seed and No. 1-ranked Lakeville North (18-3) in the second round on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Dred Scott Field. A win would send Park to the third round on Wednesday, May 22. A loss to Lakeville North would pit Park against either fourth seed Burnsville (9-8) or fifth seed Lakeville South (7-8) in the playback round immediately following the first game.
