Park gymnastics: Wolfpack vault to win over Mounds View
Despite being without two of its top gymnasts, the Park gymnastics team edged Suburban East Conference foe Mounds View 136.55 to 135.875 Jan. 29, in Cottage Grove.
With seniors Sarah LaBrosse and Michaela Thielfoldt sidelined with injuries a number of Park’s gymnasts stepped up in the victory.
Park junior Sarah Schank led the way for the Wolfpack with an all-around score of 36.375, good for second place on the night. Mounds View’s Anna House won the all-around with a 36.775.
Schank took second in the floor exercise with a 9.4, second in the bars with an 8.65, second in the beam with an 8.9 and second in the vault with a 9.425.
Park’s vault performance was key to the win. The Wolfpack scored a 36.325 in the event, its best score on the night, compared to Mounds View’s 33.875.
Park senior Allie Minogue won the vault with a 9.45. Junior Carlee Washenburger scored an 8.75, junior Gabby Page scored an 8.7 and junior Gia Larson scored an 8.65.
Park scored a 31.925 in the bars. In addition to Schank, Larson scored an 8.0, Minogue scored a 7.55 and freshman Emma Harvang scored a 7.725. In the beam, Park scored a 32.925. Washenberger scored an 8.825, Sarah Grace Quinn scored a 7.75, Larson scored a 7.45 and Minogue scored a 7.05. Park scored a 35.275 in the floor exercise. Washenberger scored an 8.95, Harvang scored an 8.65, Larson scored an 8.375 and Minogue scored an 8.175.
Park’s season-high score was 139.725 in a win over Woodbury Jan. 16.
As of Jan. 27, the Wolfpack was ranked 13th in the state Class AA rankings with a 138.725 average. Northfield is the top-ranked team in Class AA at 150.192, followed by defending state champion Roseville with a 148.625.
Park is 5-3 in the conference this season.
“The girls have been working hard this year and the coaches are very pleased with the girls’ performances,” Park coach Krissie Thrush said.
Next, the Wolfpack takes on Roseville Feb. 6. The Section 3AA Tournament will be held Feb. 14 at Eagan High School. Rosemount (144.425) is the top-ranked team in the section at fifth, followed by East Ridge (141.433) at 10th.
