The Park boys tennis team started the season 2-1 with a pair of non-conference wins last week.

Park beat St. Paul Highland Park 6-1 on Tuesday, April 8, in the season opener, lost 7-0 to Suburban East Conference foe East Ridge on Thursday, April 10, and edged Farmington 4-3 on Friday, April 11.


Against Highland Park, Park junior Mekdim DeJene won at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 13-11 in a super tiebreaker. Also, senior Pele Le won 6-1, 6-3 at second singles, senior Sam Forthun won 6-1, 6-1 at third singles and Logan Ross won at fourth singles.

In doubles play, senior Michael Nguyen and junior Parker Adams won at No. 1 doubles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, and Josh Kuemmel and Jon Song won 6-4, 6-4 at third doubles.

SEC power East Ridge swept the Wolfpack in their first conference match, however.

Freshman Anuraag Bukkuri defeated Dejene 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Le fell 6-1, 6-4 at second singles, Forthun lost 6-2, 6-2 at third singles and Ross lost 6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles. Zak Nigatu and Vishaal Gupta teamed up at No. 1 doubles to win 6-0, 6-0, while Van der Sman and Cai won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and senior Tim Holzinger and junior Hanting Guo won 6-7, 6-4, 10-3 at third doubles. The Raptors also swept doubles play.

Park bounced back against Farmington, however.

At second singles, Le won the make-or-break match, winning 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 in a super tiebreaker to deliver the victory to the Wolfpack. Also, DeJene won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Forthun and Nguyen won 7-6, 6-1 at first doubles, Kuemmel and Song won 6-3, 6-2 at third doubles.

Park was at Hastings on Tuesday, April 15, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Wolfpack welcomes rival Woodbury to Cottage Grove on Thursday.
