Park boys swimming & diving: Wolfpack's season comes to an end
The Park boys swimming and diving team finished in fifth place out of eight teams in the Section 4AA championship meet, held Feb. 21-23, at Stillwater Junior High School, however, the Wolfpack wasn't able to advance anyone to the state meet.
Park scored 183 points to take fifth - ahead of sixth-place White Bear Lake (169 points). Stillwater won the section title with 525 points. East Ridge placed second with 404 points. Woodbury took third with 298 points.
Individually, the top two finishers in each race reach the state meet along with anyone who beats the state cut time.
Park senior Michele Pau came the closest to the state meet, taking fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.42 seconds. The cut time in the event was 49.03 seconds. Pau also placed ninth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.87.
Park diver Nick Germscheid, a sophomore, came in sixth place in the event with a score of 308.70, which was just shy of state. Stillwater's Colin Eason won a very tight contest with a 378.70 score.
Also, senior Matt Henry reached the finals in two events - the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Henry's best finish came in the 500, where he took eighth place with a time of 5 minutes, 13.87 seconds. He swam a time of 1:54.93 in the 200 free for 13th place.
Park sophomore Jarrett Mansergh placed ninth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.68 and swam to a 12th place finish in the 50 free with a time of 23.72. Freshman Aaron Lewis came in 13th place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.19. Eighth-grader Mack Christianson earned 10th place in the 500 free with a time of 5:21.63 and senior Nicholas Popowitz placed 13th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.62.
The Wolfpack also put together some impressive relays. Park took fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team of Pau, Mansergh, Henry and junior Eric Solem swam to a time of 1:35.61. Park also took fourth in the 400-yard relay as the team of Mansergh, Lewis, Henry and Pau sprinted to a time of 3:28.53 in the meet's final event.
