Park boys swimming & diving: Wolfpack sunk by rival Royals
Intra-district rivals hit the pool as Woodbury boys swimming and diving team topped Park 97-84 on Thursday, Jan. 2, at Cottage Grove Middle School.
Woodbury won nine of the meet’s 12 events, including all the relays, took first and second in four of the events and mathematically won the meet with two events remaining. Park won three events – the 50-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle and the diving competition.
Woodbury began the meet with a win as the 200-yard medley relay team of Eric Westfall, Will Ho, Eric Fong and Kristopher Rennning touched the wall first in the event with a time of 1 minute, 48.49 seconds, edging Park’s team of Adam Raymond, Kevin Riepe, Ross Dietzsch and Aaron Lewis, which swam a time of 1:51.66.
Woodbury’s went 1-2 in the next event, the 200-yard freestyle, with times of 1:53.34 and 1:58.28, respectively. Park’s Mack Christianson placed third in 1:59.04. Ho won the third event, the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.98, topping Park’s Dietzsch who was second in 2:16.68.
Park’s Adam Raymond won the 50 free in 23.77, besting Woodbury’s Garrett Norsten (24.30) and Park’s Aaron Lewis (24.66). Park’s Kevin Roettger won the diving competition with 179.50 points, beating out Woodbury’s Ian Carr (177.45). Park’s Nick Germscheid was third (167.15).
Woodbury went 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 59.11 seconds and 1:00.56, respectively. Park’s Eric Solem took third (1:05.29).
Brady Bennett of Woodbury won the 100-yard freestyle, topping Park’s Lewis, who was second with a time of 54.20. Fleming took third (56.31).
Raymond earned his second trip to the top of the podium by winning the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:11.07. Woodbury’s Sroga was second (5:20.21).
Down the homestretch of the meet, Woodbury’s team won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.07 beating out Park’s Lewis, Riepe, Solem and Christianson (1:41.97).
Kinzie and Westfall then went 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 59.86 and 1:00.06, respectively. Dietzsch was third (1:07.29).
With the meet already at hand for the Royals, Woodbury went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Park’s best time was turned in by Riepe (1:13.77).
Woodbury finished the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle as the team of Westfall, Norsten, Kinzie and Bennett swam to a time of 3:31.21 to top Park’s team of Raymond, Christianson, Dietzsch and Riepe, which had a time of 3:42.44 for second place.
