Park boys basketball: Jones, Eagles end Wolfpack’s season
There was no major upset in the cards for the Park boys basketball team in the opening round of the Section 3AAAA tournament.
Defending state champion and top-seeded Apple Valley showed why it’s the No. 1-ranked team in the state in an 87-40 win over eighth-seeded Park on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Apple Valley.
The Eagles (26-1) opened up a 49-15 lead at the half on Park (3-22) before calling off the dogs.
Apple Valley senior point guard and Duke recruit Tyus Jones had 10 points and five assists in 13 minutes played while Brock Bertram led the Eagles with 12 points and nine rebounds in 15 minutes played.
Park junior forward Jeb Melson led the Wolfpack with a team-high eight points and five rebounds, senior guard Ryan Klika scored seven points and junior guard Anthony Juba chipped in six points in a team-high 25 minutes played.
Apple Valley, which beat Park 104-46 in last year’s section tourney opener, hasn’t lost to a Minnesota team since Dec. 8 of 2012 – 72-70 to Park Center in the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic last year.
The loss concluded a tough season for the Wolfpack. After snapping a 68-game Suburban East Conference losing streak last year, Park went winless (0-14) in the SEC this season, while two underclassmen – junior Tommy Tola and freshman Brandon Alt left the team mid-season.
Park graduates five seniors off this year’s club – Klika, Sully Brenke, Kenny Reid, Jordan Pinnix and Patrick Morrissey.
