The Park baseball program recently wrapped up its 2013 summer clinic.

More than 85 players participated in this year's camp, which was held Aug. 5-7 at the Park High School's Granville Smith Field for the youth of Cottage Grove.

"We were maybe expecting 30-40 campers, but to have over 80 kids sign up says a lot about the enthusiasm about baseball in our community," Park head coach John McGowan said.

For two hours each day, the campers were put through various stations: Hitting, fielding, throwing and catching and base running. Within each station, there were different drills to help each player work on that particular skill. The campers ended each day with some sort of competition, hot box, a tee ball scrimmage or whiffle ball.

"They really enjoyed scrimmaging," McGowan said. "I think they could have played all day."

The camp featured 8-10 varsity players who acted as coaches and worked with each camper on a daily basis.

"I was happy to see our varsity players work so well with the campers," McGowan said. "The campers really looked up them and some campers even asked for their autographs."

Each participant received a camp T-shirt and a new baseball for signing up.

The camp came at an ideal time since many campers finished their baseball season a few weeks ago and tryouts for traveling teams are coming in early September.
