Parents can peek inside text books tonight
District 833 parents can get an advanced look tonight at school text books under consideration for purchase.
The district will host an open house from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday in the second floor activity center at East Ridge High School. Vendors from four companies, whose books are being considered and evaluated for kindergarten through fifth-grade math instruction, will be on hand to answer parents' questions.
Various committees, including district and building math specialists, have been studying the purchase of new books for two years, according to Rick Spicuzza, district assistant superintendent of curriculum and assessment.
Workbooks for grades 1 and 2 are out of print and no longer available. The current books have no technology, such as presentations for computerized boards, he told the School Board at a workshop last Thursday.
New textbooks, which are aligned with changes in Minnesota Department of Education standards set in 2003 and 2007, will also be available for review at upcoming parent conferences.
New math books will be in classrooms this fall.
