An Oltman Middle School student has died.

The 12-year-old Cottage Grove boy died early Monday morning, May 6, authorities said.

A preliminary report found the death was by suicide, according to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.

District 833 Communications Director Barb Brown said a brief statement was read to Oltman students Tuesday explaining that a student had died and that there was help available to them. Parents also were to receive basic information about the death.

Oltman Principal Becky Schroeder said extra counselors were at the St. Paul Park school to assist grieving students. Additionally, there were clergy members at the school and the Youth Service Bureau brought three or four counselors to help, Schroeder said.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has crisis assistance at 800-273-8255 and at suicidepreventionlifeline.org.

Correction: An earlier version of this story published online May 7 erroneously reported that Oltman Principal Becky Schroeder confirmed the student died by suicide. Schroeder did not confirm that.
