‘Oktoberfest’ event Oct. 20 in Cottage Grove to benefit food shelf
South Washington County residents can celebrate Oktoberfest and help a good cause this weekend.
An Oktoberfest fundraiser planned for Sunday, Oct. 20, at Hope Glen Farm in Cottage Grove will benefit the Friends in Need Food Shelf.
It’s the first year for the event. Mary Slusser, who is helping to organize the event, said Hope Glen Farm owner Michael Bushilla told her he wanted to do something good for the community, perhaps in the form of a fundraiser. She pitched the idea of an event to raise money for the St. Paul Park food shelf.
“It’s a great opportunity for the community, for the Friends in Need Food Shelf, for everyone involved,” Slusser said.
The event is a new fundraiser for the food shelf, but it also is taking the place of an ice cream social that raised money in past years, said Michelle Rageth, director of Friends in Need. Rageth said money raised from Oktoberfest will benefit the food shelf’s emergency fund. That money is given to people in crisis situations to cover specific expenses.
The event will include five hours of dancing in a Hope Glen barn used for wedding receptions and other events. Senior citizens will be encouraged to dance during the first hour, from noon to 1 p.m., when a DJ will play big band, country, polka and other music genres.
A variety of music will be played from 1-5 p.m. and dancing is encouraged.
There will be a silent auction and several outdoor events, including a climbing wall for youth, three bounce houses and hay wagon rides. For adults, there will be bean bag toss and hammerschlagen, a game popular at Oktoberfest celebrations. Horse and carriage rides will be available for a small cost.
A group of musicians will perform outdoors, and the Cottage Grove Lions Club will oversee food and beer sales.
