Nordic skiing: Ten score all-conference honors at SEC championships
Sam Boardman and Evan Bonneson led a contingent of 10 area Nordic skiers that earned all-conference or all-conference honorable mention honors at the Suburban East Conference championship meet on Jan. 30 at Battle Creek Regional Park.
Boardman, a senior at East Ridge, earned third place at the SEC championships with a time of 36 minutes, 7 seconds in the 10-kilometer pursuit-style race. Bonneson, a senior at Park, placed eighth overall with a time of 36:34.
In the pursuit-style, skiers compete in a 5K classic race in the morning and a 5K skate (or freestyle) in the afternoon, where they literally pursue the skiers that finished ahead of them in the first race.
Forest Lake’s Leo Hipp won the meet in 35:23.Both Boardman and Bonneson ski for the PWER (Park, Woodbury and East Ridge) Nordic program. Park, Woodbury and East Ridge practice together, compete in identical races and are administrated by the same staff, but race as individual high schools.In addition, Woodbury sophomore Grant Davis and junior Paul Henning finished back-to-back, in 24th and 25th place, respectively with times of 40:41 and 40:47 to each nab all-conference awards.Also, Woodbury senior Nathan Orf, East Ridge sophomore Jacob Fabro and Woodbury senior Jeremy Storvick earned all-conference honorable mention awards. Orf took 35th place (44:29), Fabro was 37th (44:56) and Storvick was 39th (45:56).As teams, the Woodbury boys earned fifth place out of nine teams with 352 points, East Ridge took sixth with 334 points, and Park was eighth with 293 points. Stillwater won the meet with 458 points.In the girls race, Woodbury sophomore Kathleen Danielson led the PWER squad with a 17th place finish and a time of 46:27 to take home all-conference.East Ridge sophomore Megan Schiferl also earned all-conference, taking 24th place in a time of 48:35.Woodbury senior Pauline Aamodt, East Ridge sophomore Olivia Hummel and Park junior Molly Haus all earned all-conference honorable mentions. Aamodt took 30th place (50:23), Hummel was 31st (50:30) and Haus was 33rd (51:12).Forest Lake’s Rocci Wohlk won the race in 39:38.The East Ridge girls placed sixth with 331 points, Woodbury was seventh with 327 points and Park was ninth with 258 points. Stillwater won with 472 points.Next up for the teams are the section meets. Park competed in the Section 3AA championship at Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley on Tuesday. East Ridge and Woodbury are back at Battle Creek on Thursday, Feb. 6, for the Section 4AA championship meet.
