No. 11-ranked Woodbury drops Park boys hockey team 4-1
Prior to the game between the Park and Woodbury boys hockey teams, Park head coach Jay Moser said you could throw the records out the window in the first of two matches between the intra-district rivals.
And that was indeed the case on Thursday as the visiting Woodbury Royals beat the Wolfpack boys hockey team 4-1 at Cottage Grove Ice Arena in a battle that was closer than the score indicated.
Park -- winless and dead last in the Suburban East Conference -- scored first on Woodbury, who is undefeated and on top of the SEC standings, as Geno Mazzali put home the game's first goal on a pass from Mitch Giese with 4:48 remaining in the first period.
However, down 1-0, Woodbury (10-1-1; 4-0 SEC) scored back-to-back goals in the second period just over five minutes apart to take the lead for good and Woodbury's Colin Keefe put the game virtually out of reach with his unassisted goal, and second of the night, to make it 3-1 Royals with 7:45 remaining in the third period.
Woodbury added an empty net goal with 1:42 left in the game to complete the scoring after Park had pulled goalie Matt Fretwell, who had 35 saves in the game.
On Tuesday, Park (2-10-0; 0-4 SEC) throttled Bloomington Kennedy 8-0 on the road to end a 10-game losing steak.
