Newport's Pioneer Day budget increased to celebrate anniversary
To mark the 125th anniversary of Newport, city officials are increasing the annual Pioneer Day budget by $2,500 in the hope of securing additional entertainment.
“With better accounting last year we have been able to not lose any money from Pioneer Day,” City Administrator Deb Hill told the City Council last week. “We would like to use the money to get a good band.”
An Elvis impersonator will return this year, Hill said, and being able to provide event-goers with a country or bluegrass band could help boost attendance numbers.
City Council member Tom Ingemann agreed.
“Spending this money to celebrate the 125th (anniversary) isn’t a bad deal,” he said.
