Newport police reports for March 21: Theft, assault, suspicious activity

A summary of recently reported criminal activity in Newport:

Theft

A Cottage Grove woman told Newport police March 6 that her purse was stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked at Red Rock Manor, 1421 10th Ave. Loss: $150.

Assault

Police responded to a domestic incident March 8 at a home in the 1100 block of Mark Court. A man and woman were verbally fighting and then fell to the floor while fighting over car keys, according to the report. Neither wanted to pursue criminal charges. The women left the residence.

Noise complaint

Police were called after midnight March 9 to Boyd Motel, 1700 Hastings Ave., for a noise complaint. A woman in one of the motel rooms was intoxicated and said she and her boyfriend had been fighting. The man was gone when police arrived. No arrests were made.

Suspicious activity

A Jordan, Minn., woman called police Feb. 4 to report that someone tried to enter an apartment in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue. The suspect had left when the woman opened the door to the hallway.

An employee of SuperAmerica, 1625 Hastings Ave., reported suspicious activity Feb. 17. She said a man entered the store about 3:15 a.m. and used a video camera to record as he walked up and down each aisle. She asked him to leave but he kept recording. The man then asked for the employee’s name before leaving the store. The man had tattoos all over his face and neck, including on his eyelids, according to the report. Police were not able to locate him.

A Newport woman called police about 1:15 a.m. March 2 to report seeing an unknown male wearing all black and running near the fire station on First Avenue. The woman said it looked like the man was “tweaking” and he was throwing snow at icicles. Police did not locate the man.
