Recent reports of criminal activity:

Assault

A 20-year-old Newport man was arrested Jan. 27 on suspicion of fifth-degree domestic assault and underage consumption following a domestic incident at a home in the 1600 block of 10th Avenue. Police were called to the residence on a report that Mohammed hit his mother in the wrist and then left, according to the report. He was booked into the Washington County jail.

Police were called Jan. 29 to a home in Newport on a report of a domestic incident involving a 13-year-old boy. The case was forwarded to the city attorney for review. Details of the incident were not released.

A man and woman each were ticketed for disorderly conduct following a reported assault Jan. 29 at a group home in Newport. The woman reportedly pulled a knife on the man, who then shoved her to the ground. They are both residents at the group home.

A man who lives at a Newport group home was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul on Jan. 30 after he allegedly approached a group home employee while holding a knife to his neck, according to the police report. The resident did not threaten anyone else with the knife.

Theft

A Cottage Grove man reported that a Hastings man stole his cellphone while they two men were stopped at a stoplight Jan. 28 at Glen Road and Highway 61. The victim said the Hastings man got out of his car, walked back to the victim’s truck, swore at him and then reached in and grabbed the man’s phone, which was valued at $400. The suspect drove away, but was later arrested by a Dakota County sheriff’s deputy. He was expected to be charged with theft.

Drugs

Police received a call Jan. 31 about a possible drug deal that was going to occur in Newport. No further information was made public. It’s an ongoing investigation, police said.
