Recent criminal activity reported in Newport:

Property damage

A Newport man reported July 28 that an unknown vehicle struck his mailbox and left behind car parts in the 2800 block of Sterling Avenue. Damage was estimated at $30.

Newport Elementary School, 851 Sixth Ave., reported Aug. 5 that wiring on an air conditioning unit was damaged. The damage was estimated at $300.

Theft

A Newport woman reported July 31 that an iPhone was stolen from the area of Glen Road and Glen Terrace. Loss: $250.

An Inver Grove Heights man reported Aug. 2 that someone stole a .40-caliber handgun from under the driver's seat of his unlocked vehicle while it was parked in the 700 block of High Street.

Tinucci's restaurant, 396 21st St., reported Aug. 4 that someone stole one of the business vehicles, a 1997 GMC pickup, from the restaurant's parking lot. The keys were in the truck. The truck is valued at $5,400.

Break-in

Police were called at 4:30 a.m. Aug. 2 on a report of a break-in at Newport Liquor, 1638 Hastings Ave. Using surveillance video and a witness's description, police identified two suspects. The surveillance video shows a male suspect throwing a brick paver through the liquor store's glass entrance before stealing two bottles of gin from the store and leaving. The case is under investigation.
