Newport officials investigating city employee
Newport officials are investigating potential disciplinary action against an unidentified city employee, however no information about the employee or the investigation is being released.
The Newport City Council was expected to discuss “employee discipline issues and pending litigation” during a closed session following its May 1 regular council meeting, but Mayor Tim Geraghty pulled the item from the agenda.
The item was removed after the Bulletin requested information about the subject of the closed session.
City Attorney Fritz Knaak said more investigation is needed before allegations, which he declined to specify, were discussed.
“The council wants to deal with this immediately and as quickly as possible,” Knaak said in an interview. “But I think the administration decided that it needed to be handled somewhat differently.
“We are moving forward with this very cautiously.”
The apparent issue has never been dealt with by the council during Knaak’s tenure as city attorney, he said.
