Newport will use the same search firm that helped it land departing City Administrator Brian Anderson in 2009 as the city hunts for his replacement following his exit next month.

The City Council voted unanimously recently to use executive search and consulting firm Brimeyer Fursman to lead Newport's search for a new city administrator. Anderson, the current administrator, is set to exit the city Jan. 27 after officially accepting the same position with the south-central Minnesota city of Faribault last week.

The Maplewood-based firm aids cities in attracting and weeding through administrative candidates. It helped Newport cull its field of potential replacements for retired administrator Larry Bodahl to just a handful in 2009. The council unanimously chose Anderson in April of that year.

Mayor Tim Geraghty cited that experience in advocating for partnering again with Brimeyer Fursman to find Anderson's successor. The agreement will pay the firm $15,000 plus expenses, which are capped at $3,575. The council did not consider any other formal proposals.

City officials estimated last week the search process would take three to four months to complete.
