Brenda Cassellius started her career as a teacher, and the Minnesota education commissioner reverted to that role for a time Friday at Newport Elementary School.

Cassellius was a guest reader at Newport Elementary's annual "Read All Day" event, where school district leaders, city officials and others helped to promote reading. Cassellius sat "criss-cross" on the floor with students in Jennifer Sterner's preschool class and Pam Fabano's first-grade class, reading a few books and playfully quizzing the students throughout the sessions.

Newport Principal Aaron Krueger said he added the day-long event last year, and it's the culmination of activities marking February as "I love to read" month.

"It's just really about making sure kids know it's cool to read," Krueger said.
