New Life Academy enters this season as the highest ranked squad in its conference and the team still might be a year away from its prime. It boasts just one senior on its current roster and could use this year to jell and figure things out before making a real push toward a title next season.

That, however, is not the plan fifth-year coach Wally Bomgren has in mind. Though he realizes his team likely has a year or so before it approaches peak form, he wants his team to shoot high this season.

“It’s our main expectations to make a run at winning our conference and winning our section,” Bomgren said. “We want to get to the state tournament and we think we have the talent to do it.”

New Life Academy definitely has the talent to do it as it returns its entire roster from last year’s team that finished 21-11 and was just two wins away from qualifying for the state tournament. That loss to Heritage Christian in the sections semifinals last season still resonates with most players on the team, Bomgren said, and functioned as fuel for the team this offseason.

Now after months of offseason training the Eagles look poised to accomplish lofty goals this season.

As tryouts opened a couple weeks ago and Bomgren said there were “around 10 or 11 players” that are essentially locks to make the squad. He added that he’s looking to potentially add a couple younger players to the roster captained by juniors Kara Stenerson, Abby Thor, and Abby Gorter.

“It could be a big year for us,” Bomgren said. “I think this group is finally getting to the point … where some of them are starting to realize they’re slowly running out of time in their careers at New Life Academy. We hope they make the most out of it this year. We expect them to make the most out of it this year.”

The Eagles kicked off the 2014 season with wins over Chisago Lakes and Minneapolis Southwest
