New Life Academy girls basketball: Big week for Eagles, Bolduan
It was a big week for the New Life Academy girls basketball team. As a team, the Eagles won a pair of playoff games to advance in the Section 4AA playoffs, while, individually, NLA senior Emily Bolduan hit a personal milestone by going over 1,000 points for her high school career.
Bolduan, a team captain and two-time all-conference guard, scored 19 points to reach 1,000-point benchmark in the fourth-seeded Eagles 87-14 first-round win over 13th-seeded Community of Peace (3-14).
Bolduan then scored 25 points in New Life’s second section game to help the Eagles win 65-60 in overtime against fifth-seeded St. Agnes (13-13).
Bolduan stepped up her game as New Life’s leading scorer and rebounder Valerie Hohol, a junior center, was sidelined with sprained ankle for the first two playoff games. In addition to Bolduan, Molly Saum had 15 points in the win over Community of Peace and 19 points in the victory over St. Agnes.New Life Academy (17-10) will play No. 1-seed St. Croix Lutheran (23-3; 12-0 Tri-Metro Conference) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, in West St. Paul.Prior to the playoffs, New Life capped the regular season 15-10 overall and 10-3 in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association, which was good for a tie for second place in the conference.New Life finished the season with three-straight losses — 55-47 at Visitation (10-13; 6-6 Tri-Metro Conference) on Monday, Feb. 24, 68-65 at Maranatha Christian (20-5; 12-0 MCAA) on Tuesday, Feb. 25, and 55-33 at Mahtomedi (17-9; 7-7 Classic Suburban Conference) on Friday, Feb. 28.Hohol had 16 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals and senior forward Natalie Hager had 14 points and nine boards in the loss to Visitation.Against Maranatha, Hohol had a monster double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds, Hager had 12 points and seven rebounds, Bolduan scored 12 points and junior guard Sydney Steele chipped in 10 points and three assists.At Mahtomedi, Bolduan led the way with 13 points and five rebounds.
