The first tenant to occupy the planned Norris Marketplace retail center in Cottage Grove will soon open its doors.

G-Will Liquors is putting finishing touches on its new 12,500-square-foot store, anchoring the expected shopping and restaurant center at the corner of 80th Street and Hadley Avenue, and will have a soft open Monday, June 23.

Construction began last fall at the new G-Will Liquors site, which is across the street from the existing store, and despite cold winter weather and windy days in the spring that repeatedly crippled scaffolding, the grand opening of the new store is on schedule.

The vacant lot, which is adjacent to the Norris Square Senior Living development, was first slated for development by Presbyterian Homes in 2007. The City Council approved construction for 33,600 square feet of retail and restaurant space; a 36,000-square-foot, two-story medical and office building; and a 4,600-square-foot stand-alone restaurant.

The recession in 2008, however, halted development.

Andover-based Rademacher Companies currently owns the property as well as all of the Twin Cities’ G-Will Liquors locations.

Earlier this spring, crews began laying brick and installing windows, and this month completed paving work on the 64-stall parking lot.

While the future of the existing G-Will Liquors store has yet to be determined, city officials said it’s expected that the building’s broker will aggressively search for renters.

The store expects to open Monday but a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for the first week of July so the business can “work out all the kinks,” the city said.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 1.
