'Minor' ammonia leak closes rink at Cottage Grove Ice Arena
An ammonia leak discovered Wednesday has temporarily closed a rink at the Cottage Grove Ice Arena.
An exposed ammonia pipe outside the arena had a minor leak affecting refrigeration of the western-most rink in the arena, City Administrator Ryan Schroeder said.
“What we’ve found is that the piping was supposed to be in a vault and it wasn’t,” Schroeder said. The pipe runs from a compressor room to the rink. “It’s not a safety hazard … but it does have an impact on our rink.”
The rink is closed until a contractor repairs the ammonia line, which could take a couple of days. Schroeder said they hope to make the fix before the outdoor temperature warms because otherwise the rink ice could melt.
The other two rinks were not affected.
The closure will affect some practices but should not result in any hockey game cancellations, Schroeder said.
