Meeting on Cottage Grove Walmart plan Tuesday night
Walmart's real estate representative is hosting a neighborhood meeting in Cottage Grove Tuesday night to answer questions about a store proposed for the Cottage View Drive-In theater site.
McCombs Frank Roos Associates is scheduled to host an informational meeting on behalf of the Walmart Real Estate Business Trust on Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the west rink of the Cottage Grove Ice Arena to present information on the company's plans for a 177,000 square-foot Walmart Supercenter store that the city's Planning Commission will consider later this month.
The company's proposed store would be located on a portion of the more than 90 acre Cottage View Drive-In property on East Point Douglas Road near county Highway 19. The Cottage Grove Planning Commission will hear the plan May 21.
Cottage Grove Mayor Myron Bailey said he expects a range of positions among attendees at the community meeting, from those interested in the proposed store to those staunchly opposed.
"My guess is there will be poeple that will be there concerned about the Walmart coming in and replacing the drive-in," Bailey said Monday. "And, I expect there will be some people there concerned about the Walmart itself."
The company struck a purchase agreement with drive-in owner Gerry Herringer's Apache Chief Theater Co. to purchase 22 acres of theater property in March. Herringer, who has not disclosed terms of the deal, has said construction could begin this autumn if the city approves the Walmart plan in coming months.
