Man sentenced for trashing Newport motel room

A St. Paul man was sentenced to probation for damaging a Newport motel in a burst of rage that frightened someone who was with him in the room.

Donald W. Connett, 29, was sentenced for third-degree criminal damage to property, a gross misdemeanor, during a Dec. 20 hearing in Washington County District Court. He pleaded guilty last fall.

According to the criminal complaint: Connett was staying at the Red Rock Lodge with a woman on Jan. 11, 2013. She told police that they were laying on the bed when Connett became angry, jumped up and began destroying property in the room. He then jumped out of a broken window and left in his truck. She said she was afraid for her safety.

The motel manager estimated the room damage at $1,917. As part of his sentencing conditions, Connett must pay restitution in that amount.

Connett was placed on two years probation and has to serve 10 days in  jail or through Sentence to Serve.
