Man charged in felony marijuana case in Cottage Grove
A Wisconsin man faces a felony drug charge after authorities say he was found with more than 40 grams of marijuana in a Cottage Grove hotel room.
David Vasquez, 22, of Sheboygan, was charged with fifth-degree marijuana possession in Washington County District Court, following a Jan. 10 incident.
According to the criminal complaint:
An assistant manager at the Wakota Inn and Suites sought police help in evicting people from a room that was the target of complaints about loud noise and the odor of marijuana. When police arrived, nobody was in the room.
Police returned later after seeing a vehicle outside that was registered to the woman who rented the hotel room. Officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana when the entered the hotel room. Vasquez was among five people in the room. He was sitting on a chair and police saw him move his hand to hide something. Vasquez was asked to stand and walk toward officers, and when he got up from the chair a large bag full of marijuana was found. A second, smaller bag of marijuana was found in the suspect’s pants pocket.
In all, the marijuana bags weighed over 65 grams, the complaint said.
Vasquez had a Jan. 23 court appearance. The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
