Local woman to appear on 'Let's Make a Deal'
Cottage Grove Minnesota 7584 80th Street South 55016

The casinos weren't the only places where a Cottage Grove resident had the chance to win big on her recent trip to Las Vegas.

Shauna Oney was a contestant on the show "Let's Make a Deal" which airs Thursday, Feb. 25.

"I had a really fun time," Oney said. "Everybody behind the scenes was so nice."

Oney was not allowed to disclose her winnings before the air date, but she said the biggest prize up for grabs on the show was a $22,000 sport-utility vehicle.

Oney, a veterinary technician who has lived in Cottage Grove for nine years, said she and three of her traveling companions had packed their costumes -- audience members typically dress up on the show -- with plans to audition to be contestants. She and her boyfriend were jailbirds, she said.

"I didn't really anticipate getting on, so I was surprised," she said. "I was really nervous, really, really nervous."

Oney said it was hard to hear the show's host, Wayne Brady, because the audience was yelling so loud. Taping the show only took about an hour, but the group showed up about four hours prior for the audition, which required filling out paperwork, going through security and being interviewed in groups.

The group of Oney, her boyfriend, his mother and his grandmother laughed a lot and had fun with the silliness of being dressed up, during the audition process, which took place at the Tropicana Las Vegas hotel where the show is filmed, she said.

"They want you to be really excited on the show, and really show a lot of enthusiasm," she said. "It was actually kind of tiring all the clapping and cheering."

Oney said she never saw the original version of "Let's Make a Deal," which aired from 1963 to 1976, but she did watch a few episodes of the new version, which debuted last year.

Because of the way the commercial breaks worked out, Oney didn't get a lot of face time with Brady, but he led her through the game she played.

"It was fun to say I got to meet him and stand right next to him," she said.

She said she'd never done anything like it before, but she'd definitely do it again.

"There's a lot more behind the scenes than you really know," she said.
