Lent, the 40-day season of preparation before Christians celebrate Easter, will be observed at churches throughout south Washington County, beginning on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. Below, is a brief summary of events.


"Concrete Faith in a Crumbling World" is the theme for Lent this year at All Saints Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove. Using "An Altar in the World" by Barbara Brown Taylor as the base for our weekly Wednesday night worship starting with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 17, we will consider simple practices of discovering the sacred in our everyday lives," said senior pastor Jules Erickson.

Ash Wednesday worship begins at 6:46 p.m. on Feb. 17, with a pancake supper before worship from 5 to 6:30 pm.

"Join us on Wednesdays during Lent for a light supper at 5:30 p.m. and Holden Evening Prayer worship at 6:46 p.m.," Erickson said.

Community United Church of Christ, 1145 Summit Ave., St. Paul Park -- The congregation at Community United Church of Christ, 1145 Summit Ave., in St. Paul Park, will open the Lenten season with an Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17 service of candlelight, song, prayer and ashes at 6 p.m. Beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 24, a simple soup meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. with worship at 7 p.m.

Rose of Sharon Lutheran, 6875 Jamaica Ave., Cottage Grove -- The congregation welcomes everyone in the community to its midweek Lenten services at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 17 through March 31. A light supper will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

St. Ambrose of Woodbury, intersection of Bailey Road and County Road 19, Woodbury -- All are welcome to join in the Lenten mission at Saint Ambrose of Woodbury Catholic Church during five Fridays of Lent, Feb. 26 to March 26. Each evening will include Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m., a soup supper at 6 p.m. and guest speakers at 6:30 p.m.

Archbishop Harry Flynn will speak about sacrifice on March 5; Bishop Lee Piche will speak about prayer on March 19; Father Tom Walker will speak about Jesus Christ on March 26.

Woodbury/Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church -- Ash Wednesday worship services are scheduled to begin on Feb. 17 at both campuses of the Woodbury/Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church. At the Cottage Grove campus, 8600 90th Street, a simple soup supper is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. followed at 7 p.m. by a traditional service of prayers, imposition of ashes and Holy Communion. At the Woodbury campus, 7465 Steepleview Road, there will be a traditional service at noon and at 7 p.m.

Zion Lutheran, 8500 Hillside Trail, Cottage Grove -- On Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 17, all are welcome to a soup supper at 5:30 p.m. to be followed with a worship service at 7 p.m. Church youth and adults will present a living Stations of the Cross during the Holden Village evening worship.
