Late night fire causes 'extensive damage' to Ideal Avenue home in Cottage Grove

By the time crews arrived, the back of the home was engulfed with flames. Cottage Grove Fire Chief Rick Redenius said the fire most likely started on the back porch.

“It looks like it started on the deck but we’re not certain yet of the cause,” he said Monday. “There was a gas grill out there and the residents did have a smoking area on the porch.”

The home belongs to the Lizak family, who was home when house caught fire. Redenius said all escaped and were accounted for, except the family cat, Snickers. However, firefighters entered the home when the fire was contained and found the family pet alive.

“The damage to the house is pretty extensive,” Redenius said. “The roof is gone and I suspect most of the kitchen is gone because it was right off the deck. And there is a lot of water damage.”

The cause of the fire, Redenius said, is still uncertain and the case is currently under investigation.
