Kuemmel's Corner: Park nominates three student-athletes for ExCEL award
Park juniors Bailey Aasen, Meghan Kuemmel and Ethan Berube have been nominated to represent the school in the Minnesota High School League’s ExCEL award.
ExCEL — Excellence in Community, Education, and Leadership — is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities, volunteer in their communities, and are model citizens.
Park has two female recipients this year. One is Bailey Aasen. Bailey is involved in cross country, hockey and lacrosse. She is a captain in lacrosse and last year earned all-state honors. In the school she is a Link Crew leader and is a member of Leaders of the Pack. Aasen is very involved in her church, participating in summer mission trips and a national youth conference. She also volunteers at youth sports clinics and participated in Relay for Life and Locks for Love. Bailey has taken many IB and AP courses and has a GPA of 4.0.The other is Meghan Kuemmel, who plays soccer, basketball, and softball for the Wolfpack, and participated in band her freshman year. She is involved in National Honor Society, Youth Advisory Council, Link Crew, Leaders of the Pack, and is a school shadow at Park. Kuemmel is also very involved in her church, participating in summer mission trips and the CORE team. She volunteers at youth sports camps and participated in Feed My Starving Children, Salvation Army bell ringing, and has planned and hosted a party to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Meghan is a full IB Diploma Candidate and has a GPA of 3.9.Ethan Berube is Park’s male recipient. He has participated in cross country, soccer, Nordic skiing, and track and field for the Wolfpack, and has also served as a manager for the girls basketball team. He has also participated in choir and speech while at Park. He is involved in Student Council, Site Team, Youth Advisory Council, Link Crew, and Leaders of the Pack. Berube is also an anchor for the Park News Network and is a Super Fan. Outside of school he volunteers at youth sports camps and Feed My Starving Children, is involved in his church, and does yard work and shoveling for his neighborhood. Ethan is on the A honor roll and has a 3.8 GPA.This is the 18th year that the MSHSL has sponsored the ExCEL award. An independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota will select ExCEL Award recipients in January. Award winners will be announced via the League website on Feb. 3 and will be recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the broadcast of the 2014 winter tournaments.
