Kuemmel's Corner: Park athletic awards ceremony began 14 years ago
Each spring the Park Coaches Association sponsors an athletic awards ceremony. This tradition was started by Park coaches 14 years ago to honor our student-athletes. The coaches took this task on themselves because there was not a building athletic director at the time. They have done a great job through the years and I am glad to say that the tradition has continued.
This year's ceremony will be Wednesday, May 29 in the Park cafeteria. Pizza and beverages will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the awards presentation. The major awards that will be given out include the Honor Athlete, Earl Gustafson, U.S. Marine Corps, Athena and Apollo, Triple "A," and Pride in the Pack Awards. All athletes, teams, and coaches who have received special honors or recognition during the past school year will be introduced, including three-sport letter winners and academic all-conference. We have had many team and individual accomplishments this year in both athletics as well as academics.
Park grad Steve DuVal will be the guest speaker. Steve, a 1986 graduate of Park, was an all-state wrestler for the "Indians" and was inducted into Park's Hall of Fame last year.
The South Washington County, CGAA baseball, CGAA softball, and Brad Swanson Memorial scholarships will also be given out at the ceremony. There will be a media presentation at the end of the program. A special thank you goes to the Park High School Concession Stand for their help in sponsoring this event. Also, thanks go out to the following coaches for their extra work on the ceremony: Mr. Juba, Mr. Schwartz, Mr. Leonard, Mr. Maher, Mrs. Paleen, Mr. McGowan, and Mrs. Christensen. This ceremony is a great way to recognize the success that we have had this year and it is a perfect way to wrap up the school year. Each student in attendance will receive a small gift from the coaches association. All student-athletes and their families are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!
